While outside linebacker Brian Orakpo appears likely to play for the Redskins when they open their season Sunday at Houston, cornerback Tracy Porter and inside linebacker Akeem Jordan will not.
Orakpo, limited in practice for the third consecutive day on Friday, is listed as questionable on the injury report, while Porter and Jordan are both out and will not play after missing the entire week of practice.
The game will be the first Orakpo has played in Houston since 2005, when he was a freshman at Texas playing in the Big 12 championship game. He sprained his right ankle in the preseason loss at Baltimore on Aug. 22 when Ravens left tackle Eugene Monroe hit him with an awkward cut block.
Porter has been battling a strained hamstring since the Redskins’ preseason game against Cleveland on Aug. 18, while Jordan sprained the MCL in his left knee in the preseason game against Tampa Bay on Aug. 28.
“Those hamstring injuries are tough, but always, you see on an MRI, it doesn’t seem to match sometimes what the body feels like,” said coach Jay Gruden. “Sometimes it feels better than what it shows and sometimes it’s worse than what it shows. It’s gonna be on all on Tracy in his recovery, and when it’s ready will be dependent upon Tracy.”
Porter was away from the team on Wednesday and Thursday to visit a specialist, who determined that the injury was nothing more serious than a pulled hamstring.
“With muscle injuries, you can’t put a timetable on things,” said Porter, who is entering his seventh season and played in all 16 games for the first time last year in Oakland. “It goes day-by-day, and I’ve been feeling good, feeling better, day-by-day, and that’s the only thing that I can hope to continue to improve day-by-day, leading up to game time. We’ll see what happens.”
