Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps was arrested on DUI and other charges in Maryland early Tuesday morning.
Mr. Phelps was driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone inside the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 in Baltimore around 1:40 a.m., said Maryland Transportation Authority Police, a local NBC affiliate reported.
The athlete was also charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines.
Mr. Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete in history with 22 medals, including 18 gold. He has not yet confirmed his plans for the Summer Games in Rio in 2016, the station reported.
Mr. Phelps previously pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in November 2004. He was ordered to serve 18 months probation in that case.
