The thousands who’ve amassed in the streets of Hong Kong to rally for democracy have taken up the chant of Ferguson, Missouri, residents, calling out to responding police, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” various media reported.
“Hong Kong ’hands up, don’t shoot’ emulation of Ferguson protests is such a powerful image,” tweeted Dan Gillmor, next to a picture of the massive crowd bordered by uniformed officers, Vox reported.
Police, meanwhile, are using full force to contain the protesters, and tensions are rising, Vox reported.
Another tweet described the scene: “These images from Hong Kong with young protesters being gassed, with their hands up, just like Ferguson are AMAZING,” wrote Shaun King, Vox reported.
Thousands have hit the streets in Hong Kong to call on the Chinese government to honor its promise and grant them full democracy by 2017.
In Ferguson, meanwhile, protesters are still clashing with law enforcement over the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown by police Officer Darren Wilson.
