Robert Griffin III vowed Wednesday to play well for the rest of his teammates when the Redskins open the regular season on Sunday against Houston.
Griffin was inconsistent over 67 preseason snaps and did not lead the Redskins to a touchdown on any of his 11 series. The only scoring drive he oversaw was in the preseason opener against New England on Aug. 7, when Washington went 35 yards in 11 plays to set up a 39-yard field goal from Kai Forbath.
“Like I’ve said many times this offseason, they go as I go,” Griffin said. “If I play well, we play well. If I don’t play well, we don’t play well. I understand that. They understand that, and I’m gonna do my best and I promise I’ll play well for them.”
The quarterback, set to begin his third season in the NFL, admitted to feeling anxiety regarding the season opener. He believes, however, that everyone should have feel a similar way on the cusp of a new season.
“I mean, you always have butterflies,” Griffin said. “You’re always high on emotions when you go out there. You always want to go out there and feel excited about the game of football. It’s a beautiful game. I think if that changed, for me or anybody in that locker room from the first season until now, then you shouldn’t be playing.”
Despite finishing 2-14 last season and losing middle linebacker Brian Cushing to injury after seven games, the Texans had the No. 7-ranked defense in the league.

That should pose a sudden challenge to a Redskins offense still trying to find its footing.
“They’ve got great players all over the board, whether it’s Brooks Reed, J.J. Watt, [rookie Jadeveon] Clowney, [Jared] Crick,” Griffin said. “You know, all these guys do a good job rushing the passer, playing well in the run game. Like I said, we know we’ll have our hands full, but once again, we’re ready for the challenge.”
