The Dallas Cowboys announced Wednesday that they’ve signed Michael Sam — the NFL’s first openly gay player — to the team’s 10-man practice squad.
“We just want to give him a chance to come in and help our football team,” coach Jason Garrett said, ESPN reported. “That’s where our attention is [on football]. What people say outside the organization is up to them.”
Sam had three sacks during preseason games with the St. Louis Rams before he was released last weekend.
Sam’s new Cowboys practice number will be 46, ESPN reported. His St. Louis number 96 jersey had cracked the top 10 in NFL sales over the summer prior to his release.
