A group of protesters in Ferguson clashed with police in the early Friday morning hours, just shortly after police Chief Tom Jackson had issued an apology to the family of Michael Brown, who was killed by an officer.

Authorities said several were arrested right outside the police department, ABC News reported.

The scuffles seemed centered on Chief Jackson’s mea culpa on Thursday to the family of Brown, who died at age 18 after he was shot by police Officer Darren Wilson. Many in Ferguson are clamoring for Officer Wilson’s arrest; the officer, meanwhile, says he shot Brown in self-defense.

The shooting took place weeks ago, but tensions in Ferguson remain high. The Department of Justice has stepped in to investigate for evidence of racism or civil rights infractions among the police officers.

“All those things that are causing mistrust are being evaluated, and we are going to be making changes,” Chief Jackson told the protesters, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
