First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to headline a rally next week for Rep. Mike Michaud’s gubernatorial campaign in Maine.
Mr. Michaud, a Democrat, is looking to unseat Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican, in the November election.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Mrs. Obama will appear with Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, at a rally on Oct. 3 at the University of Maine in Orono.
Planned Parenthood also launched a pro-Michaud ad this week that accuses Mr. LePage of curbing health care access for women. Mr. LePage denies the charge.
Mr. Michaud is clinging to a small 41 percent to 39.2 percent edge over Mr. LePage in a three-way race that includes independent Eliot Cutler, who is receiving 12.7 percent, according to a Real Clear Politics Average of polls.
Mr. Michaud, who could become the first openly gay person elected as governor, has also campaigned with former President Bill Clinton and James Carville, who ran Mr. Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.
