The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are warning local law enforcement agencies to be on alert for people who might try to carry out attacks on U.S. soil in retaliation for U.S. bombings against terrorists in Syria.

Although officials have said there is no imminent threat, the government is concerned about attacks carried out by single individuals or small groups in the name of terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State.

U.S. bombing missions also have targeted an al Qaeda branch known as the Khorasan Group. Officials said the group was nearing the execution phase of an attack against America or Europe, and had been experimenting with creating explosives that could be carried on an aircraft undetected.

The FBI and DHS issued a warning Tuesday night that security and law enforcement agencies should remain vigilant against any possible attacks.
