AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Construction is starting on an aquarium being built at a shopping mall in suburban Detroit.

A groundbreaking event was held Tuesday morning for the attraction at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills. It’s scheduled to open in the spring.

Plans call for displays of diverse marine life at the 35,000-square-foot aquarium from a company called Sea Life. A tropical ocean tank with a walk-through underwater tunnel is planned along with hands-on areas and displays of Great Lakes marine creatures.

Organizers say the aquarium will have 5,000 creatures.

Michigan has a number of aquariums, including one on Detroit’s Belle Isle that was closed for years before it reopened.
