President Obama will deliver a statement Tuesday morning about the U.S.-led airstrikes against militants in Syria that began overnight.
The White House said Mr. Obama will speak at 10 a.m. before departing for New York, where he will take part in a U.N. Climate Summit.
A coalition led by the U.S. launched strikes Monday night in Syria with cruise missiles, bombers and jets against targets of the Islamic State. At least 14 strikes were carried out, U.S. Central Command said.
Military officials also said the U.S. took separate action to disrupt “the imminent attack plotting against the United States and Western interests conducted by a network of seasoned al Qaeda veterans — sometimes referred to as the Khorasan Group — who have established a safe haven in Syria to develop external attacks, construct and test improvised explosive devices and recruit Westerners to conduct operations.”
Those airstrikes were undertaken only by U.S. assets, Central Command said.
