COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Duke Energy says it plans to remove coal ash from one South Carolina waste pit and close two more at a power station that environmentalists say threatens the Saluda River.
The utility disclosed details Tuesday at a South Carolina Public Service Commission meeting.
Duke’s environmental policy and affairs director, Mike Ruhe, says the company has three, unlined coal ash pits at the W.S. Lee Power Station.
He says they will move waste from the site’s only inactive dump to a lined pit. The company also plans to close the two remaining pits, but is still studying the options.
Frank Holleman, senior staff attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center, says the plan doesn’t go far enough. He says Duke is leaving in place unsafe dams.
