More than 100 activists were arrested Monday in New York City during “Flood Wall Street,” a protest against what organizers say is the corporate world’s contribution to climate change.
Protesters stopped traffic for several hours on Broadway south of the New York Stock Exchange. Shortly after the close of trading, demonstrators tried to push back metal barricades that police had put in place. Pepper spray was used on the crowd and a subsequent sit-in resulted in dozens of arrests, Reuters reported.
Police said a total of 102 were arrested over the course of the day. Protest organizers gave the same estimate of arrests.
The demonstration came a day after roughly 310,000 people flooded the streets of New York City, in what activists described as the largest protest ever against climate change, Reuters reported.
The event is part of Climate Week and comes ahead of a Tuesday U.N. Climate Summit.
