A police officer with the New York City force was killed and eight of his fellow officers injured when the van they were all riding in smashed into a concrete barrier in the Bronx.
Michael Williams, 25, was thrown from the back window of the van and pronounced dead at a local hospital, iStreet Research reported.
Eight other officers in the van suffered minor injuries.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said police were mourning the loss of Williams and praying for the full recovery of all those injured, iStreet Research reported.
The police were headed to a massive rally on climate change to help out with crowd control when their van struck the barrier. Officials are investigating the cause of the crash.
