Michael Sam might not stay unemployed for long.

Cut by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, Sam was headed to Dallas on Tuesday to take a physical for the Cowboys, according to an ESPN report. He was expected to join the team’s practice squad if everything checked out.

The NFL’s first openly gay active player might actually end up helping the Cowboys, who are far thinner on the defensive front than the Rams. Sam was among the final cuts in St. Louis despite racking up three sacks during the preseason.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said at the time the decision was based entirely on performance and had nothing to do with concerns about Sam fitting in with the team.

“There were no issues, that’s the thing,” Fisher told reporters. “No issues in the team meeting room, on the field, anyplace.”

St. Louis had selected Sam in the seventh round out of Missouri after he earned SEC co-defensive player of the year honors last season.
