Republican Rep. James Lankford enjoys a two-to-one lead over his Democratic challenger in the race for an open U.S. Senate seat in Oklahoma, according to Rasmussen Reports.

Mr. Lankford leads state Sen. Connie Johnson 58-29 percent to assume the seat left by Sen. Tom Coburn, a Republican who is leaving at the end of the year, according to the pollsters’ first look at the contest.

The winner of the special election between Mr. Lankford and Ms. Johnson will serve the remaining two years of Mr. Coburn’s term.

Republicans hope to retake the Senate majority this year by picking up six seats in November’s mid-term elections.

With the Oklahoma race firmly in hand, they’ve been focusing resources on tougher contests in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon and Virginia.
