It’s no secret that GOP Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is considering a presidential run in 2016. But he says neither he nor his wife are completely sold on the idea yet.
“We really haven’t finally decided,” he told Real Clear Politics. “My wife is not completely convinced of it. And some of it is that things can change. Within six months, will we still be in a position, through national surveys, that people think we can compete? Will there be a reason why we couldn’t? So I think you have to wait a little while until you get closer to the season of campaigning for that office.”
Mr. Paul spoke on the Senate floor Thursday for nearly an hour, slamming President Obama’s plan to arm and train Syrian rebels to combat the Islamic State terrorist group, also known as ISIS or ISIL.
Mr. Paul said he’s not categorically opposed to war, pointing out that he supported the decision to go into Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
But he has also criticized Democrats and Republicans alike for their positions on last decade’s Iraq War, and Thursday blasted “the moss-covered, too-long-in-Washington crowd” calling for “more war” and “barnacled enablers” who “have never met a war they didn’t like.”
