TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - School groups and the general public can tour northern Michigan fishing weirs this fall to learn about hatching operations.
The state Department of Natural Resources says the tours are free of charge at the Boardman River Weir in downtown Traverse City, the Little Manistee River Weir in Manistee County and the Platte River Weir in Benzie County.
Weirs are dam-like structures that block upstream fish passage on a river. The DNR uses them to harvest salmon for fish production efforts.
Visitors learn about salmon, how weirs and fish ladders work, invasive species, state fish hatcheries and the DNR’s annual egg collections and their effects on Michigan’s fisheries.
Visits can be scheduled in September and October. Information on dates and times is available at https://www.michigan.gov/huntfishcenter .
