LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Republican Gov. Susana Martinez says state government’s finances are on “solid ground” because of her fiscal policies and she’s criticizing Democratic challenger Gary King for supporting tax increases two decades ago when he was a legislator.
Martinez spoke Thursday at a public policy conference at New Mexico State University and King is to appear later in the day.
The governor touted her work with the Legislature in 2011 to plug a budget shortfall and she pointed to business tax cuts approved during her administration to encourage economic development.
But she said King “looks to taxes” when government faces budget problems.
King supported tax increases in 1987, when the state faced a budget squeeze because of a drop in oil and gas revenues. King was elected attorney general in 2006.
