A new poll shows the U.S. Senate race in Iowa this year in a dead heat between Republican state Sen. Joni Ernst and Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley.

Forty-one percent opt for Ms. Ernst, and 41 percent choose Mr. Braley, according to the Fox News poll, in a race likely to go down to the wire.

The two are fighting to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin in a contest that will help determine who controls the U.S. Senate after the November midterms, with Democrats trying to fend off Republicans’ quest to win a net of six seats in order to re-take an outright majority.

Just 38 percent approve of President Obama’s job performance, with 57 percent disapproving. Thirty-seven percent say the country is better off than it was in 2008, and 54 percent say it is not.

The survey of 600 likely voters was taken Sept. 14-16 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
