Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Tuesday that he is concerned Senate Democrats will try to pass an immigration bill and tax increases during a “lame-duck” session of Congress after the elections.

“They want to tax the Internet and they know the only way to get that done is to do it during a lame-duck with members of Congress who have just been defeated at the polls and are not coming back, because there is no longer any accountability from the voters,” the Republican told radio host David Webb on SiriusXM Patriot.

He also said he believes Democrats “want to pass amnesty” in the lame-duck session.

The breakdown in the Senate is currently 55 Democrats and 45 Republicans. The GOP believes it can win enough seats in November to take control, but those new senators wouldn’t be seated until January, leaving two months for Democrats to pass any final legislation.

Mr. Cruz, who is believed to be preparing for a presidential bid in 2016, said it is “wrong for us to have a lame-duck session for anything that is not a true emergency.”
