Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday that quarterback Robert Griffin III will have his dislocated left ankle immobilized in a hard cast for approximately 10 days and will then face a four-to-six-week rehabilitation.

Griffin dislocated the ankle in the first quarter of Washington’s 41-10 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday but did not break any bones and will not require surgery.

“Nothing new popped up, as far as any new injury [has] popped up,” Gruden said. “It was what we thought it was, and it’s just going to be 10 days in a cast and then we’ll look at it from there.”

Should Griffin miss only five weeks — the 10 days in the cast, which he was fitted for on Monday, plus the additional time for rehabilitation — he could be able to return as soon as the Redskins’ game at Dallas, a “Monday Night Football” game, on Oct. 27.

It’s more likely, however, that Griffin would be able to return sometime in mid-November.

Kirk Cousins, who replaced Griffin against the Jaguars, will take over as the Redskins’ starting quarterback beginning Sunday at Philadelphia.

“All that being said, this isn’t something we need to make a big deal of,” Cousins said Wednesday, referring to the quarterback situation. “We’re going on the road, we’re playing a great football team — a team that’s 2-0, leading our division — and we need to have a great week of practice to be ready to play them.”
