PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The state has received a $650,000 federal grant to help plan for a new mass transit center in Providence.

Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced the federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation Wednesday.

The money will be used for the final pre-construction planning to build a modern intermodal facility at the Providence Amtrak station, which state officials say has outgrown its 1980s design.

The state Department of Transportation plans to improve the existing station while the planning continues for the new center. The plans include reconstructing the entrance plaza, improving access to the station and repairing the building’s facade. Construction begins in the spring and is expected to be complete in 2016.
