AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A California billionaire’s environmental group is launching operations in Maine as it looks to defeat Republican Gov. Paul LePage.
The political action committee NextGen Climate says its targeting 90,000 Maine voters that it believes are concerned about climate change and hopes to use the issue to get them to the polls.
Chief Strategist Chris Lehane said Wednesday that the effort will include calling voters, going door-to-door and paid advertisements to oppose LePage and support Democratic candidate Mike Michaud. He declined to say how much money the group would spend or how many people it would have working or volunteering in Maine.
LePage’s campaign says that the governor believes in climate change, has a strong environmental record and understands that Maine’s natural resources are the backbone of the state’s economy.
