Former U.S. Rep. Bob Beauprez leads incumbent Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper by 10 points in the fall contest, said a new poll released Wednesday.

Mr. Beauprez leads Mr. Hickenlooper among likely voters, 50 percent to 40 percent. The two are essentially running even among female voters, while Mr. Beauprez has a 20-point lead among male voters at 54 percent to 34 percent. The Republican challenger also leads the incumbent by 13 points, 50 percent to 37 percent, among independent voters.

Libertarian Matthew Hess and Green Party candidate Harry Hempy each draw 3 percent in the Quinnipiac University poll.

“Pundits were predicting that Gov. Hickenlooper faced a close race for re-election. Instead, he’s got a mad dash to make up a double-digit deficit,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.” ’The Democrat does not get the traditional strong support from women to offset Bob Beauprez’s army of support from men.”

The survey of 1,211 likely voters taken from Sept. 10-15 has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
