The Washington Redskins released safety Bacarri Rambo on Tuesday.
Rambo, a second-year player and former All-American at Georgia, was presumably waived to open a roster spot for strong safety Brandon Meriweather, who returned from a two-game suspension Monday.
The team made no mention of Meriweather when it announced the Rambo move Tuesday afternoon.
Rambo started in place of Meriweather during Washington’s first two games but struggled in pass coverage. He was on the wrong end of two lengthy touchdown passes, missing a tackle on a 76-yard score by DeAndre Hopkins in Week 1 and unsuccessfully trying to jump in front of a pass to Marcedes Lewis on Sunday. The second mishap resulted in a 63-yard score, and Rambo was benched in favor of Trenton Robinson shortly thereafter.
Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett had praised Rambo throughout the preseason for his improvements in pass coverage, claiming the former sixth-round draft pick was taking better angles when pursuing the ball. Rambo at one point described the difference in his play between this year and last year as “night and day.”
But despite those supposed improvements, Rambo continued to be in the middle of defensive mistakes.

The move leaves the Redskins with five safeties on their roster: Meriweather, Ryan Clark, Duke Ihenacho, Akeem Davis and Robinson.
Also Tuesday, the Redskins signed defensive lineman Hebron Fangupo to their practice squad and released defensive lineman Derrick Hopkins from the squad. Fangupo, 29, is a former USC and BYU player who has spent time with the Chiefs, Steelers, Seahawks and Texans organizations.
