A new poll shows incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan up by four points in the hotly-contested race in North Carolina, one of about a half-dozen states that will determine which party will control the U.S. Senate after November’s midterm elections.
Among likely voters, Ms. Hagan leads Republican Thom Tillis, 44 percent to 40 percent, according to a poll released Tuesday by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling.
Libertarian Sean Haugh took five percent in the poll. When Haugh supporters were asked to choose between the other two candidates, Ms. Hagan continued to hold a four-point lead, 46 percent to 42 percent.
Republicans need to gain a net of six seats to re-take control of the U.S. Senate, where Democrats hold a 55-45 advantage. They look to be in a good position to win open seats in Montana, South Dakota, and West Virginia now held by Democrats, but will still have to pick up at least three other seats to regain a majority.
The survey of 1,266 likely voters was taken Sept. 11-14 and has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
