U.S. airstrikes in Iraq destroyed 162 Islamic State vehicles: Pentagon

U.S. airstrikes in Iraq have destroyed 162 vehicles that were formerly in possession of the Islamic State group.

The Pentagon said Wednesday that 154 airstrikes by U.S. fighter jets, bombers and drones have destroyed 212 targets, including 162 vehicles, the military blog Defense Tech reported.

The website added that roughly five airstrikes have been carried out per day since the Obama administration authorized the operations Aug. 8. Most of the airstrikes have taken part near Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. The Pentagon confirmed 91 airstrikes around the Mosul dam as of Wednesday, Defense Tech said.

President Obama said in a televised address to the nation Wednesday night that he intended to intensify airstrikes against the Islamic State group moving forward.

“I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are,” Mr. Obama said. “That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”
