ATLANTA (AP) — A group of metro Atlanta taxi drivers and owners is suing the ride-sharing service Uber, saying the company operates as a taxicab service without a license.
Uber connects passengers with drivers through a smartphone application.
The taxi drivers and owners say Uber is violating a city ordinance that makes it illegal for a taxicab to operate without a city-issued certificate.
The Daily Report reports that the lawsuit was filed in Fulton County Superior Court by 13 plaintiffs and seeks class action status for other taxi drivers. The suit names Uber’s parent companies as well as 22 Uber drivers as defendants.
Uber spokesman Taylor Bennett said the San Francisco-based company will fight the lawsuit. Bennett tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Uber will defend the rights of riders to have competition and choice.
