Linebacker Brian Orakpo is still trying to heal an injured ankle. He was limited in Wednesday’s practice.
Orakpo and coach Jay Gruden said the ankle injury was not an issue last Sunday when the linebacker was limited to four tackles in the season-opening loss to the Houston Texans. The Texans often split out, putting Orakpo in coverage situations and limiting his rush opportunities.
“That’s a great gameplan by them,” Orakpo said. “Sometimes you have games like that, where you put your best guys out in space and they did that. We had to do our best to make our plays out there.”
Strong safety Duke Ihenacho, who is being considered to start this week after Bacarri Rambo’s massive blunder in the opener allowed a 76-yard Texans touchdown, twisted his ankle during individual drills Wednesday. He was limited at practice.
Left tackle Trent Williams (shoulder) was also limited in practice.
Tight end Jordan Reed has a “minor” hamstring pull and will be evaluated on a “week-to-week” basis, according to Gruden.
Reed injured his hamstring after making a 4-yard reception, his first of the game, with 1:26 remaining in the first quarter during Sunday’s opener against the Houston Texans. He was hit first by Texans free safety Kendrick Lewis, who lunged at Reed’s right leg, then was hit from behind by middle linebacker Brian Cushing.
Reed did not participate in practice Wednesday. Asked if he had hope that Reed would play Sunday, Gruden said, “very little.”
“I wouldn’t say there’s no chance, there’s always a chance,” Gruden said. “But, I think the way he’s walking around right now, it’s pretty sore for him.”
The injury is the eighth Reed has sustained since joining the Redskins as a third-round draft pick prior to last season. He missed the final six games as he continued to recover from the effects of a concussion.
Defensive lineman Kedric Golston (groin) is day-to-day. Safety Akeem Jordan (knee) is “a little gimpy,” according to Gruden. Cornerback Tracy Porter (hamstring) did not practice today.
