Liberal-leaning late-night talk show host Bill Maher told reporters Wednesday that he could see voting for Republican Sen. Rand Paul over Hillary Rodham Clinton for the 2016 presidency.
“Rand Paul is an interesting candidate to me. Rand Paul could possibly get my vote,” Mr. Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” told The Hill.
Mr. Maher admitted that he favored the less adventurous foreign policy espoused by Mr. Paul’s father, former Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, and said that Mrs. Clinton, a former Secretary of State, was too keen to go to war.
“As I always used to say about his father, I love half of him. I love the half of him that has the guts to say we should end the American empire, pull the troops home, stop getting involved in every foreign entanglement,” Mr. Maher said of the Kentucky Republican, adding that the younger Mr. Paul is “way less of a hawk than Hillary, and that appeals to me a lot because I’m not crazy about how warlike she is.”
Mr. Maher donated $1 million to a super PAC for President Obama’s 2012 campaign, but told The Hill that he would not do the same for a Clinton super PAC saying, “I’m not as big a fan of Hillary as I am of Obama. So we’ll see who’s running. I’m not even committing to being for Hillary.”
