Five questions facing the Redskins as they face Arizona on the road this Sunday:
1. Can Kirk Cousins snap his losing streak? The quarterback has not been able to lead the Redskins to victory in a start since 2012, leaving him 0-6 during that span. His performance in a loss to Seattle on Monday was markedly better than the one against the New York Giants on Sept. 25, and he’ll face a defense allowing the second-most passing yards in the league.
2. How can the Redskins handle Arizona’s pass rush? Under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, the Cardinals have ratcheted up the pressure, blitzing the quarterback more frequently than any other team this season. Astonishingly, they have just four sacks, tying them for the second-fewest in the league. The Redskins have struggled in pass protection this season and will need to be ready.
3. Will the offense continue to run the football? Even though running back Alfred Morris’ numbers were dismal against Seattle on Monday — he had 13 yards on 29 carries, a 2.2 yards-per-attempt average — the Redskins stuck with the running game to take the pressure off Cousins. The Cardinals have a similarly stout run defense, ranking fourth in the league entering the weekend, and it could be another long game for Morris & Co.
4. Who will play quarterback for the Cardinals? Carson Palmer is still recovering from a pinched nerve in his right shoulder and Drew Stanton, who filled in the last three weeks, is working his way back from a concussion. Rookie Logan Thomas, out of Virginia Tech, finished the loss to Denver on Sunday and would play if neither Palmer nor Stanton are cleared.
5. Does Pierre Garçon get more involved? Coach Jay Gruden said earlier this week that the Redskins need to find a way to get the ball to Garçon, who set a team record for receptions last season. He had five or more catches every game in 2013 but has been held to two receptions in the last two games.
