President Obama told young entrepreneurs Thursday that Republicans in Congress are holding back the economy and preventing wages from growing faster.
“We’ve got a Congress that has been spending a little bit too much time worrying about the next election and not enough time worrying about the next generation,” Mr. Obama said at a business venue for start-up companies in Santa Monica, California.
The president made his remarks before heading to the home of actress Gwyneth Paltrow for his 57th Democratic campaign fundraiser this year. Mr. Obama is trying to rally the Democratic base of young voters, women and minorities to vote in the mid-term election, when Democratic turnout is typically weak.
The president told the young business owners that he has reduced the federal budget deficit, and said lower deficits will help them succeed.
“We can manage the country’s finances while still investing in you,” Mr. Obama said.
The president also said he hopes that Congress will pass immigration reform within the last two years of his administration. He said the “smarter” Republican lawmakers understand the need for action, but the tea party Republicans are resisting.
