The International Monetary Fund managing director said Thursday that she’ll do whatever it takes to convince lawmakers to pass banking operation reforms — even if that means belly dancing before Congress.
“I have threatened even doing belly dancing,” said Christine Lagarde, making joking remarks to a financial industry crowd in Washington, D.C., The Hill reported. “If that’s what it takes, then I will deliver it. But I hope it doesn’t.”
IMF officials have been pushing for lawmakers to approve changes to the banking industry for months now. Senate Democrats passed some in the aid bill to Ukraine, but Republicans said no — that the measures as proposed would reduce Americans’ influence over the banks, The Hill reported.
Ms. Lagarde said she needs more financial people to help her to convince Congress to act.
“We are still, I feel like, a bit of a bargaining toy between various … people who actually believe that the IMF is OK,” she said, The Hill reported. “It’s above my floor, and I hope you can help.”
