Two dozen people were arrested Wednesday near the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City as hundreds of employees protested plans by the hotel to cut pension and health benefits.
“Hopefully, we’re getting our voices heard, making a statement that our health benefits are very important to us,” said Paul Smith, who works as a cook at the Taj Mahal casino, Reuters reported.
Police said at least 300 people took part in the protests and none of the 24 arrested were resisting.
Trump Entertainment Resorts, the owner of the Taj Mahal, filed for bankruptcy last month and is seeking the court’s permission to terminate health benefits and a pension plan. The company has said it will close in November if a deal is not reached, Reuters reported.
The protest was held several blocks away from the Taj Mahal near the Tropicana, owned by billionaire investor Carl Icahn, Trump Entertainment’s main creditor.
Workers held signs featuring what appeared to be images of Mr. Icahn, with the message: “Billionaire picking over our bones,” Reuters reported.
