The race for the open U.S. Senate seat in Georgia remains neck and neck, with Republican David Perdue holding a 1-point lead over Democrat Michelle Nunn in a new poll released Thursday.
The SurveyUSA poll showed Mr. Perdue slightly ahead of Ms. Nunn 46 percent to 45 percent. That’s close enough to be called a “dead heat” and unchanged from the same poll two weeks ago.
Ms. Nunn, the daughter of former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, is one of the Democrats’ best chances to flip a GOP-held seat and possibly hold off a Republican takeover of the Senate majority. At least Democrat-held seats are in play, compared to just three Republican seats.
The GOP needs to flip six seats to win majority control of the Senate.
Mr. Perdue, a business executive, has held a thin lead in most recent polls. The Real Clear Politics average of recent Georgia polls gives him a 3.2 percent advantage over Ms. Nunn.
In the new poll, Nunn holds an exceptionally high 87 percent support from the Democratic base.
“That is the only way she can remain competitive in a contest where, today, independents break nearly 5:3 for her Republican opponent,” said the pollsters.
Mr. Perdue gets his competitive edge from the red state’s conservative voters, with 77 percent backing him.
