A Brunswick, Georgia, police officer was arrested after he allegedly took three hostages at gunpoint and holed up in an empty office at an apartment leasing facility.
WTLV-TV reported that two shots were fired during the standoff that ensued with other members of the Brunswick Police Department, but that nobody was injured.
Capt. Kevin Jones said Officer Darry Williams, 43, a 17-year veteran of the force, went into Brunswick City Hall on Wednesday afternoon and told everyone he had a weapon and they had “10 minutes to call SWAT,” WTLV-TV reported.
Capt. Jones also said he had actually met with Officer Williams earlier in the day to give him instructions regarding a personnel matter — and that “he was not happy with that,” the news outlet reported.
Officer Williams reportedly left City Hall on his own, and while walking down the street, came across the two females and one male he would ultimately allegedly take hostage.
“I was headed to the gym to work out and when I turned the corner there was an armed individual standing there and told me to get naked at gunpoint, or he would kill me,” one of the reported hostages, Shantell Parker, told WTLV-TV.
Ms. Parker then said a second female and man walked by, and Officer Williams allegedly took them hostage, also.
Officer Williams ushered them into the Norwich Street Commons Apartments. Police responding to the scene were able to convoke Officer Williams to let them go, one by one, over the next half hour, WTLV-TV reported.
Officer Williams faces charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated assault and potentially more, Interim Chief Jimmy Carter said. He’s currently in jail, on administrative leave from the force.
