A Nevada senator who was presenting remarks on the state’s overturning of a gay marriage ban was so overcome with excitement apparently that he turned to his male partner of six-plus years and proposed, right on stage.
“I was telling my story, and it just came out,” said Sen. Kelvin Atkinson, CNN reported. “I proposed to him on stage in front of everyone.”
The 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in California just overturned Idaho’s and Nevada’s bans on gay marriage, and Mr. Atkinson was in the middle of discussing the fate of same-sex unions in the state when he proposed to Sherwood Howard.
After Mr. Atkinson proposed, people in the crowd started crying and making noise, so some missed Mr. Howard’s response, CNN reported.
“He said yes,” Mr. Atkinson said in the CNN report. “We have been asked to be Nevada’s first same-sex couple to get married … but we haven’t decided yet. I’m going home to talk about it right now actually.”
