SAN FRANCISCO — It’s another beautiful day at AT&T Park, and again the Washington Nationals will take the field with their season on the line.
After avoiding the sweep Monday with a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, the Nationals will field the same batting order they have used throughout the National League Division Series. That order struggled in the first two games of the series but showed signs of life Monday, especially late in the game, beginning with a three-run seventh inning.
However, the lineup still has significant room for improvement. Though Anthony Rendon is 7 for 15 in the NLDS (.467), the rest of the order is a combined 13 for 96 (.135) entering Tuesday. And they are again one loss away from elimination.
“We still got a lot of work to do, man,” Denard Span said Monday night. “They’ve got the upper hand. We gave ourselves a chance to play for tomorrow. We’ve just got to take one game at a time. But they’re still in the driver’s seat.”
While the Nationals kept their usual lineup, the Giants made a few minor adjustments to face Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez. Switch-hitter Pablo Sandoval, who struggles when hitting from the right side, dropped in the order and Juan Perez will replace Travis Ishikawa in left field.
