The FBI is reportedly investigating Islamic State graffiti that has been cropping up in several places around Washington, D.C.

Marin Cogan of New York Magazine reported that she noticed “ISIS-related graffiti” around her Northwest Washington neighborhood.

She posted two different photos taken from Connecticut Avenue that showed “Allahu Akbar” in Arabic, followed by “ISIS.”

Jennifer Williams, of Texas, also posted a photo on Twitter showing similar graffiti on Connecticut Avenue from more than a week ago.

Other reported instances of vandalism said “by the permission of God” in Arabic and “CIA” in English, Miss Cogan said.

Will McCants, director of the Brookings Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World, said he has seen the graffiti in D.C., too.

“I’ll bet it’s just someone goofing off,” he told Miss Cogan. “Why write Allah Akbar in Arabic and then switch to the Latin alphabet for ISIS?”

FBI spokesman Andrew Ames said they “are aware of the graffiti” and “urge anyone who sees suspicious activity or if anyone has any information about this vandalism to report it to the local authorities or to the FBI,” Miss Cogan reported.
