A dog that was unwanted, at an animal shelter, and given a lethal injection somehow came back to life — and subsequently was named “Lazarus,” after the biblical Lazarus that Jesus saved.

The mixed breed now lives with a family in Birmingham, Alabama, NBC News reported.

Animal control officer Wanda Snell said she witnessed the veterinarian insert the needle into the dog and press to release a lethal amount of the chemical. But the next morning, he was wide awake and full of energy, NBC reported.

That’s when a rescue worker named him “Lazarus,” the news outlet reported.

The dog was placed in the Ozark City Animal Shelter after being hit by a car.

“His body overcame, and he had a will to live and somehow, some way he made it through,” said shelter volunteer Cortney Blankenship, NBC News reported.
