Dennis Rader, the man known as the BTK killer — for “bind, torture, kill” — said he’s agreed to work with writer Katherine Ramsland to author a book about his infamous serial murders.
Rader can’t profit from the work, The New York Times reported. He said in a letter from prison that he’s going to help Ms. Ramsland write the work to help the families of the 10 people he killed in the Wichita area with their finances, The New York Times said.
“I can never replace their loved ones, my deeds too ’dark’ to understand, the book or movies, etc., is the only way to help them,” Rader wrote. “The long work on a book is close to a deal.”
A percentage of the profits will go to the families, The New York Times reported.
Ms. Ramsland, for her part, said the work will likely be an academic book to help investigators understand the serial killer mind.
“I’m trying to make this a serious effort that will have some benefit for people who study this kind of crime,” she said.
Ms. Ramsland is a forensic psychology professor at DeSales University in Pennsylvania.
