Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall recently slipped while getting some pizza in his kitchen and re-tore the Achilles tendon in his left ankle, coach Jay Gruden said Friday.

Gruden said Hall would require a second round of surgery to repair the tendon, delaying his rehabilitation process. The 11-year veteran had already been ruled out for the remainder of this season after rupturing his Achilles in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I guess he had a late night getting some pizza or something in his kitchen and slipped and re-tore it,” Gruden said. “That just is going to delay his rehab obviously and unfortunately, but hopefully we will still be able to get him back by the start of the season next year.”

Gruden said he did not know when the 30-year-old cornerback would have his second surgery.

Hall began the season as Washington’s defensive captain and played most of the first three games before injuring his ankle in the fourth quarter of the team’s loss to the Eagles on Sept. 21.

After recovering for roughly six weeks following his first surgery, Hall will now essentially start from scratch. Though Gruden did not set a specific timetable for Hall’s recovery, the usual time frame for a torn Achilles to heal is seven to nine months.

“It might, obviously, impede his progress as far as OTAs and maybe training camp and all that,” Gruden said. “Just a fluke thing.”
