Rep. Charlie Rangel tossed out the race card and said publicly this week that many Republicans are haters who think slavery is still alive and well.
Mr. Rangel made the comments at a re-election rally for Gov. Andrew Cuomo, while discussing the need for Democrats to win the upcoming elections, Newsmax reported.
“We have to win,” the 84-year-old congressman said, Business Insider reported. “We have to be able to send a national message with Andrew Cuomo. And the thing is everything we believe in — everything we believe in — they hate.”
Mr. Rangel, a New York Democrat, went on to say that Republicans don’t just stand in simple disagreements with Democrats over policy.
“They don’t disagree — they hate,” he said, Newsmax reported. “They think if you didn’t come from Europe 30 years ago, you didn’t even make it. Some of them believe that slavery isn’t over, and they think they won the Civil War.”
Mr. Rangel has compared Republicans to Confederates from the Civil War era on previous occasions, Newsmax reported. But at the pro-Cuomo rally, Mr. Rangel also painted Democrats as doing “God’s work,” the news outlet said.
“Everything we’re doing is God’s work: education, health care, affordable housing, discrimination, paying people the minimum wage,” he said, Business Insider reported.
