Iran’s media reported Thursday that authorities have foiled a plot to sabotage the country’s heavy water tanks.

Heavy water is one of the key ingredients in building and maintaining a nuclear reactor.

The Arman quotes Ashghar Zarean, the deputy head of Iran’s nuclear department, as saying the government staved off the attack “in recent weeks.” Mr. Zarean also said a country was behind the sabotage attempt, but he didn’t specify.

Iran’s only known heavy-water reactor is currently being constructed in the city of Arak, in the central area of the country.

Tehran has accused the West for years of undermining its nuclear program. The West says Iran is building nuclear weaponry; Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceable purposes only.
