Even Jay Carney, former White House press secretary to President Obama, thinks Democrats are in for a rough ride this Nov. 4.
“No matter how you slice it,” he said, during an interview on “the Lead” on CNN, “Republicans are going to pick up seats in the Senate and the House, and they may win control of the Senate.”
His advice to fellow Democrats?
“They need to mobilize their base voters, and that is especially true of minority voters,” Mr. Carney said, The Hill reported.
But in the end, it may not matter, he said.
“Democrats are, as we’ve talked about before, going to have a bad Election Day,” Mr. Carney said, The Hill reported.
Recent polling shows he’s right. Republicans are favored to win control of the Senate, and wrest seats from Democrats in Montana, West Virginia and South Dakota, at the very least. The Republican Party could make gains in Arkansas, Louisiana, Colorado, Alaska and Iowa, too.
Current White House press secretary Josh Earnest, however, wasn’t so negative about his party’s chances this election.
“We continue to be confident because of the message that the vast majority of Democratic Senate candidates are carrying about how important it is for Congress to be advancing policies that benefit middle-class families,” Mr. Earnest said on Tuesday, The Hill reported. “That’s in the best interests of the country. I think it also is a value that the vast majority of voters agree on.”
