Brittany Maynard, a 29-year-old woman with inoperable terminal brain cancer, has checked off the final list on her bucket list: seeing the Grand Canyon.
After developing severe headaches a year after her wedding, she discovered she had an aggressive brain cancer. Doctors gave her six months to live.
“The Canyon was breathtakingly beautiful,” she wrote on her website, CNN reported. “I was able to enjoy my time with the two things I love most: my family and nature,” she added.
The California woman moved with her family to Oregon, one of only five states where “death with dignity” medical procedures are legal. “I quickly decided that death with dignity was the best option for me and my family,” Ms. Maynard wrote for CNN.
Ms. Maynard, who earlier indicated her intention to take her own life on Nov. 1, said in an interview with CNN that she will die in the bedroom she shares with her husband, surrounded by family and with specifically chosen music playing in the background.
She has also started an organization, Compassion and Choices, to assist and promote the notion of death with dignity for those, like her, who are terminally sick.
“My dream is that every terminally ill American has access to the choice to die on their own terms with dignity,” she wrote on her website, CNN reported.
