A radio ad campaigning for North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan attempts to tie her Republican challenger to the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
The ad, which is clearly geared toward black voters, says, “[Thom] Tillis won’t fight for us. Instead, he made it harder for communities of color to vote, by restricting early voting and voter registration. Tillis even led the effort to pass the type of ’Stand Your Ground’ laws that caused the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.”
Trayvon Martin was 17 when he was shot to death in 2012 in Sanford, Florida, by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman did not use Florida’s “stand your ground” laws as a defense during trial. He was acquitted of second-degree murder and of manslaughter in July 2013.
The North Carolina ad, recorded and posted online by conservative blogger Sister Toldjah, was put out by the Harry Reid-backed Senate Majority PAC.
