A Pennsylvania state Supreme Court justice who received and trade pornographic emails with friends left his post Monday.
Justice Seamus McCaffery, a Democrat, announced his retirement after being suspended last week by his colleagues on the state’s high court. He was caught up in a wide-ranging porn scandal that has also caused resignations by two top aides of Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, who is running for re-election.
Justice McCaffery, a former Philadelphia police officer, was accused of trading hundreds of sexually explicit emails with employees in the state attorney general’s office. Chief Justice Ron Castille, a Republican, called him a “sociopath” last week in the latest example of their long-running feud.
Justice McCaffery, 64, was due to stand for a retention election in 2017 for another 10-year term on the high court, where he could have served until mandatory retirement in 2020.
The Philadelphia Daily News first reported his decision to retire.
