By a 52- to 41-percent margin, likely voters want to see Republicans control Congress over Democrats, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Annenberg poll said.
That’s up from a 5-point GOP edge on the question from a week earlier. The Wall Street Journal noted that Republicans had a 7-point lead on the question at this stage during the 2010 midterms, when the GOP picked up seats in the Senate and romped to historic gains in retaking control of the U.S. House.
Registered voters, a broader sample than likely voters, also give Republicans a 4-point edge on the congressional control question, 46 percent to 42 percent — up from a 2-point advantage from the week before.
About a quarter of likely voters say they’re feeling better about the Democratic party based on what they’ve heard, read or seen in the past couple of weeks compared to 53 percent who say they’re feeling worse.
The GOP is doing comparatively better in that regard; 35 percent say they’re feeling better about the party compared to 40 percent who say they’re feeling worse.
