Hawaii residents of one village are poised to evacuate in the face of approaching lava from a new eruption from the volcano Kilauea that’s been moving at the rate of 10 yards per hour.
Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira sent out a preliminary evacuation notice for the homeowners who are now in the front line of fire from the volcano, the Los Angeles Times reported. But a full evacuation for Pahoa’s 9,000 or so residents could be put in effect by Tuesday, if conditions don’t change.
“The current timelines are based on the current flow rates and that could chance,” Mr. Oliveira said, the Los Angeles Times reported. “That could speed things up as well as it could slow things down. The key is that we will be watching the flow 24-7.”
Civil Defense Community Response Team volunteers have been going door-to-door to tell residents what’s going on, the newspaper said.
